Wooster Halts Hollins Win Streak

Hilton Head Island, SC - The second of three matches in Hilton Head featured Hollins challenging a College of Wooster team that brought a 9-1 record into the match. Hollins looked to run their win streak to three after wins over Guilford and Juniata leading up to Tuesday's showdown with the Scots.

The #1 doubles team from Wooster gave the Scots a 1-0 lead after the mornings first match came to a conclusion. The Hollins duo of Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy rallied from an early deficit to pull to within a game, 5-6. However, their opponents settled in and took the final two games to earn the point. At #3 doubles, the Green and Gold tandem of Kateri Johnson and Liz Rochow led throughout the match but a late rally tied to score at 8-8. A seven point tie-breaker would decide the match and Hollins rose to the occasion, building a big lead, and closing out the Wooster team by the score of 7-2. 

The college of Wooster used a strong singles lineup to sweep matches 1-5 but at #6 singles, Valerie Sargeant came back from a one set to love deficit to take the second set, 6-2, and force another tie-breaker. This time the 10 point tie-breaker would decide the winner if the individual match. Sargeant raced out to a 2-1 lead but saw Kendra Devereux come back to take the lead at the change over, 4-2. Devereux would put herself on the brink of the win, 9-3, until Sargeant mounted a comeback of her own. Sargeant would take the next three points before falling 10-6 in the third set tie-breaker.

Hollins will wrap up her four match road trip, that started on Friday in Geensboro, tomorrow morning when they face Carroll University at Chaplin Park on Hilton Head Island.
