Box Score Roanoke, VA - The Hollins University tennis team took the court for the final time this season when they played host to long time rival Sweet Briar College on Thursday afternoon. Before the start of the match, the Hollins community took a moment to honor her two seniors.
Wibecka Oliver and Neha Batool were honored before the match by a large crowd of classmates, coaches, and friends. The duo promptly went out and helped to account for four points for a Hollins team that swept the doubles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over the Vixens. Oliver teamed with Gaelin McLeod at #1 doubles to earn a come from behind victory, 9-8. Batool and Amelia Verkerk cruised to an 8-1 win at #3 doubles while the team of Jhovanna Salmeron and Htet Myat San completed the sweep for Hollins with an 8-5 win of their own.
In singles action, McLeod won at the top spot with an easy 6-2, 6-1 win to set the tone for Hollins. Verkerk added a win at #3 as did San at #5. But the day belonged to the seniors as Batool rallied after falling in set number one, 6-2, to force a third set tie breaker. The points went back and forth and in the end, the senior pulled off the comeback with an 11-9, third set victory. After her doubles win, Oliver carried that confidence and momentum into singles play where she dispatched of her opponent 6-1 and 6-0.
The Hollins team will end the sesaons on a high note with the win over their arch rivals and hope to carry that success into the 2016-17 season next fall.
