Hollins Goes To The Wire With Wasps

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - For the second match in the last three days, the Hollns tennis team found themselves in a tightly contested battle.  Hollins fell on the road to Lynchburg College on Friday night and looked to rebound at home against Emory & Henry.

The Wasps jumped out to an early advantage when the visitors took two of the three doubles matches.  Hollins was able to earn a point at #2 when Jhovanna Salmeron and Htet Myat San won, 8-5.

In singles play, Emory & Henry quickly won at #1 and #6, to put the home team in a big hole.  Hollins began to climb back into the matchup as Neha Batool won in straight sets at #4 singles, 6-4 and 6-4.  Each of the remaining matches would require a third and decisive set to determine the outcome.  After Salmeron picked up her second point of the afternoon (6-2, 4-6, 6-3), Hollins had cut the deficit to 4-3.  Hollins had the lead in the third set at #3 singles but Savanna Summers of E&H battled back to tie the set at 6-6.  Trailing in the tie breaker, Summers rattled off five straight points to close out the match, 5-4, for the Wasps.  San was able to finish off her opponent at #5 singles but in the end, Hollins had once again fallen in a heartbreaker.

The Hollins team will close out Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday with a trip to Bridgewater before their home and season finale against arch rival Sweet Briar on Thursday afternoon.
