Box Score Lynchburg, VA - The Hollins University basketball team was in action for the final time during the 2015-16 season when they traveled to Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. Hollins faced off with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) leading Hornets looking to gain a bit of momentum heading into Monday night's opening round of the conference tournament.
Prior to tip, Lynchburg College took a moment to honor their three seniors, a group that is the first in the ODAC era to record a winning season in each of their four years. The home team used the emotion of the afternoon to get out to a quick start, netting the game's first five points. Hollins rallied to cut the lead to a single point after a 4-0 run of their own. However, the ODAC's preseason pick to win the league ended the first period with a 17-4 surge that put the contest firmly in control of the Hornets. Lynchburg used their size and near perfect free throw percentage to push their advantage to 38-14 at the break.
The second half would continue to see the Hornets control the action on both ends of the floor. Lynchburg would dominate the third period and once again increase the lead. When all was said and done, 11 of the 14 Lynchburg players scored en route to the regular season clinching victory, 87-33. The Hornet women were able to secure the number one seed in next week's ODAC Tournament, their first regular season championship in school history.
Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) paced the Hollins offense with 10 points and four rebounds. Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) added eight points before fouling out while Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) came off the bench to grab a game high 11 rebounds.
All ODAC performers Chaney Forbush and Charmaine Hairston led a trio of Hornets in double digits. Hairston recorded a game high 19 points with Forbush and Caroline Neumann each scoring 14.
Hollins will travel to Harrisonburg to face the #5 seed, Eastern Mennonite in the first round of the 2016 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The first round will take place on Monday night with the winner going to the Salem Civic Center on Thursday afternoon to face Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals.
