Hollins Falls In Home Finale

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - For the final time this season, the Hollins University basketball team defended her home court when they played host to Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  The game was originally scheduled to be played in Salem but due to the winter storm in late January, Hollins and their long time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals switched home and home sites.

Hollins saw their guests get off to a quick 9-0 start.  After a timeout by Coach Logan, Hollins began to play much better and played the Maroons even for the remainder of the first period.  The second quarter saw Hollins turn the tables on Roanoke by scoring six of the first eight points of the frame.  The first two minutes were dominated by the home team, forcing the Maroons to take a timeout of their own.  However, Hollins quickly saw their momentum wrestled away and Roanoke finished the half on a 17-3 run.

Hollins shot just 31% during the first 20 minutes and the second half was no better.  Hollins continued their poor shooting, 26.9%, in the second half and with the turnovers beginning to mount, Hollins could not cut into the deficit.  As the horn in the Hollins gym sounded for the final time this season, it was Roanoke that secured the victory, 71-36.

Playing in her final home game, senior Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) recorded a team high 11 points.  Smith added three assists and a pair of rebounds.  Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) added 10 points and four helpers while fellow first-year forward Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) came off the bench to score six points and a game high 11 rebounds.

All ODAC performer Cary Beahm netted 19 points and nine boards with Bridget Holleran adding 13 points and a game high six assists.  Roanoke used a balance attack to control the offensive end of the floor as a trio of Maroons added nine points apiece.

Hollins will wrap up regular season play at Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins will tip with the Hornets after the Lynchburg men's game, approximately 4:30pm.  The 2016 ODAC Basketball Tournament will get started with the opening round on Monday night.  Washington and Lee travels to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday with Hollins going to play the loser of that game on Monday night.
