Yellow Jackets Pull Away From Hollins

Box Score

Ashland, VA - The Hollins basketball team continued it's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road trip when they traveled to face Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.  The Yellow Jackets avoided the upset when they used a 10-0 run to start the fourth period to pick up the conference win, 80-54.

After a hot Randolph-Macon start, Hollins pulled even late in the first quarter when Jewellanna Parfitt (Ronaoke, VA) converted a layup to make the score 9-9.  The Yellow Jackets quickly answered and took a nine point advantage into the second period.  Hollins once again began to close the gap, using a 9-5 run of their own to pull within five at the midway point of the quarter.  Yet another Yellow Jacket surge allowed the home team to take an eight point lead into the break.

The third period saw Hollins continue to stay with striking distance.  However after a Parfitt three pointer in the period's final minute, Randolph-Macon didn't allow their guests to find the bottom of the net until the 5:04 mark of the fourth quarter.  The 13-0 Yellow Jacket surge put the game out of reach as Hollins fell on the road.

First-year forward Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) paced Hollins with 16 points.  Sroge went 6-8 from the free throw stripe and added three rebounds and a pair of assists.  Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) joined her fellow first-year in double digits with 12 points and six rebounds.  Parfitt added nine points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Senior Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) netted six points while recording team highs with seven rebounds and five assists.

Katie Anderson led Randolph-Macon with 19 points and an ODAC record 28 rebounds.  Anderson bested the previous record, established in 2004, by two caroms.  Hannah Livermon and Taylor Intermill added 11 points apiece with Jayla Wade netting nine.

Hollins will return home for a game with Emory & Henry on Wednesday night.  The rematch with the Wasps is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
