Winchester, VA - After the winter storm over the weekend, the Hollins basketball team made the long trip up interstate 81 to face Shenandoah University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.  The game, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was moved to Sunday before finally landing on the schedule for a Monday night tip-off.

The Hornets came to Hollins earlier in the season and picked up a non-conference win, 70-48.  Hollins, playing much better of late, looked to turn the tables on Shenandaoh and after the first 10 minutes of play the two ODAC foes were separated by a single basket.  The road team used a 4-0 run to close the half and sent the game into the break tied at 26-26. 

Neither team could get any sort of separation for the first half of the third frame.  With about 5:00 remaining in the period, the Hornets used an 11-0 run to break the game open and take a 12 point lead into the final quarter, 44-32.  Hollins was able to win the final period but it wasn't enough to come back against the home team, 57-47.

First-year point guard Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) led Hollins with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.  Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) came off the bench to score 10 points and add a team high nine rebounds.  Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) and Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) recorded indetical stat lines of eight points and seven rebounds.

Olivai Callen, 13, and Kanesha Foster, 12, led a balanced attack for the Hornets.  Erin French just missed a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.

Hollins will be back at home on Wednesday when they host the annual cross-town matchup with Roanoke College.  The game with the Maroons is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
