Box Score Roanoke, VA - With the first snow of the new year as the backdrop, Hollins welcomed Randolph College to town for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. The two long time conference foes came into the game looking for their first ODAC win of the season.
Hollins got off to a very slow start, trailing 2-10, and digging themselves a sizeable hole to try to dig out of. After the first period, Hollins found themselves down 12, 19-7. The second half saw each team enjoy control and after Hollins cut the lead to seven, the Wildcats pushed their advantage to it's largest of the evening, 14 points. Hollins quickly cut the deficit to 10 and a late three pointer by Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) pulled the home team to within seven as the teams headed to the locker room.
The third quarter saw Hollins slowly trim the Randolph lead and as the seconds ticked away, a Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) three pointer got Hollins all the way back to within a single point. Another Parfitt three pointer gave Hollins her first lead of the evening in the opening minute of the fourth period. The home team would control the game for the first eight minutes of the final frame but at the 1:51 mark, Daijah Johnson calmly hit a free throw line jumper to allow Randolph to re-take the lead. Another WildCat hoop pushed the lead to three but Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) answered right away, setting up the final, thrilling 30 seconds. The Hollins defense forced a back court violation to give them possession and a chance to take the lead. Parfitt drove to the basket and as the whistle blew, just 8.9 ticks remained. Parfitt converted both free throws and allowed Randolph to take a timeout and take advantage of the new rules. In the final minute the team taking the timeout is allowed to move the ball into the front court. Jacqueline Hockman beat her defender and drew the help side defense. Hockman found an open Rebecca Harvey deep in the paint. Harvey sent the ball through the net with 2.9 seconds and after Hollins missed a desperation heave, it was Randolph that earned a hard fought 65-64 win.
Parfitt posted a season high 24 points and seven rebounds while Sroge added 16 points and eight boards. Senior Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) registered double digits for the third straight outing with 14 and Valencia finished with seven points, five rebounds, and a game high eight assists. Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) came off the bench to grab eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
