Salem, VA - The Hollins University tennis team saw their season come to an end in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament. Hollins exceeded expectations by securing the #7 seed in the tournament after being picked to finish last in the 12 team conference.
Hollins made the short trip to Salem to face ODAC and cross-town rival Roanoke College. The Maroons had defeated Hollins earlier in the season and the road team came looking to turn the tables on the #2 seeded Maroons.
Hollins took some games in each of the three doubles matches but couldn't take any of the three points and trailed, 0-3, going into the singles matches. Roanoke would only need to take two of the six singles matchups in order to advance to this weekend's semifinals. After winning at #2 and #5, the outcome of the match was decided. The two foes played the match out, with the homestanding Maroons taking eight of the matches with just one contest still being played. Senior Victoria Coffee (Plano, TX) took the first set in a hard fought, 6-4, win. The second set saw Coffee and her opponent, Emily Henderson, locked in a tight, point for point, battle. Coffee enjoyed a 2-1 lead but found herself down, 15-40, before battling back to force deuce. The May graduate then found a way to win the game and push her lead to 3-1. Coffee road her momentum to a second set win, 6-1, to earn a point in her final collegiate match.
Hollins finished the season with an 8-11 overall record. Hollins will have to replace a group of seniors that helped to rejuvenate the Hollins tennis program and put the team in good position to move back up into the top half of the conference going forward.
