Roanoke, VA- Hollins played their final regular season match on Tuesday afternoon when they hosted Lynchburg College. The match, originally scheduled for late February, had been rescheduled several times throughout the season. Hollins won two of the three doubles matches en route to a 7-2 ODAC victory.
Seniors Victoria Coffee (Plano, TX) and Tiffany Hodges (Vinton, VA)played their last regular season match as doubles partners and got Hollins off to a good start with an 8-0 win at #1. Lynchburg battled back to win at #2 doubles but the Hollins #3 duo of Amelia Verkerk (Chapel Hill, NC) and Rikako Hirayama (Tokyo, Japan) gave the home team the lead with an 8-1 win.
Verkerk finished off her opponent at #4 singles just minutes before Coffee notched her 12th individual win of the season at #1. #2 singles also went to Hollins as Hodges won, 6-1 and 6-2, giving Hollins the match. Htet Myat San (Mandalay, Myanmar) picked up another point with a 6-1 and 6-1 win at #5 and Jhovanna Salmeron (Zebulon, NC) made the final score 7-2 after a great, three set, come back win. Salmeron dropped the first, 3-6, before mounting a rally that saw her sweep the second set and prevail, 10-6, in the third set tie breaker.
Hollins picked up their fifth conference win of the season, breaking a seventh place tie with their arch rivals from Sweet Briar College. Hollins will have the #7 seed in the upcoming 2015 ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament. Hollins will have a short trip as the travel to the #2 seeded Maroons of Roanoke College on Sunday. The quarterfinal match is scheduled to begin at 11:00am in Salem.
