Roanoke, VA - Playing their third conference match in as many days, the Hollins tennis team looked to make it three in a row when they welcomed Randolph College to town on Monday afternoon. With a win, Hollins would pull even with the WildCats in the ODAC standings.
Hollins got the match off to a good start when the #1 doubles team of Victoria Coffee (Plano, TX) and Tiffany Hodges (Vinton, VA) won their second consecutive ODAC match by besting their opponents from Randolph, 8-4. The WildCats took #2 doubles and with the early lead in the balance, the Hollins duo of Jhovanna Salmeron (Zebulon, NC) and Ashley Gao (Pearland, TX) saw their comeback bid fall just short, 5-8, to give Randolph the lead.
Coffee took the first set of her #1 singles match, 6-2, before her opponent had to retire due to injury. The win was the sixth ODAC win in the month of May for the reigning Hollins Student Athlete and ODAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Randolph won a trio of singles matches to claim the necessary five points. With the outcome determined all eyed shifted to court five for a thrilling third set tie breaker between Amelia Verkerk (Chapel Hill, NC) and senior Danielle Lewis. Verekerk took the first set, 6-1, before Lewis battled back to take set number two, 4-6. With the tie breaker tied at 8-8, Lewis rattled off two straight points to win her match and give the WildCats a 7-2 ODAC victory.
Providing the weather cooperates, Hollins will play for the fourth consecutive day when they host Lynchburg College tomorrow afternoon at 4:30pm.
