Roanoke, VA - A beautiful Saturday morning was the backdrop for an all important ODAC showdown between Hollins and Virginia Wesleyan. Hollins came into the match trailing the Marlins in the ODAC standings and the winner would have a leg up in securing a berth in the upcoming, season ending, ODAC Tournament. The weather was much appreciated as Hollins starts a seven match in eight day stretch that includes multiple rescheduled matches due to the wet spring.
The doubles matches went to Hollins as the home team claimed two of the three possible points by winning at #1 and #3.
The first match finished during singles play was a very quick 6-0 and 6-0 sweep by Hollins #1 Victoria Coffee (Plano, TX). Virginia Wesleyan won in straight sets at #3 to make the match 4-2. Tiffany Hodges (Vinton, VA) took the first set, 6-3, before falling in set number two, 1-6, to set up a thrilling third set tie breaker at #2 singles. Hodges held off her opponent and came away with a hard fought, 10-8, third set victory to secure the match for Hollins. Having claimed the five needed points to win the match and with three singles matches on going, the only thing in doubt was the final score. The home squad swept the three remaining matchups to finish the match with a, much needed, 7-2 ODAC victory.
Hollins will not have any time to celebrate as their next match, tomorrow morning at Guilford, now becomes the most important match of the Hollins season.
