Box Score Winston-Salem, NC - For the final time in 2015, the Hollins basketball team took the court when they traveled to Winston-Salem to face Salem College on Monday night. Hollins made the trip south looking to even their record heading into exams and the holiday break. Hollins recovered from a slow start to take a lead into the break and held the home team at arms length throughout the second half, but a late three pointer sent the game into overtime. After the extra five minutes, Hollins found themselves on the short end of an 86-83 score.
The game started with each team taking the lead in a back and forth first five minutes of play. With the score tied at 15-15, the homestanding Spirits used a 12-4 run to close the opening period with an eight point advantage. Salem built onto their lead, pushing it out to a 33-21 cushion. Hollins came out of a timeout and thanks to a bucket by first year guard Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX), the visitors started to find their range and get back into the game. When the halftime horn sounded, Hollins had used a 21-5 run to take a four point lead into the break, 42-38. Valencia scored 12 of her game high 27 points during the final six minutes of the second quarter.
Hollins continued to control the matchup throughout much of the second 20 minutes. However, the Spirits wouldn't go away and with just seconds on the clock, had cut the deficit to just a single point, 70-69. Junior Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) stepped to the free throw line with 14 seconds left and promptly buried a pair to give Hollins a three point advantage. Salem called timeout to advance the ball to half court and with less than three ticks on the clock, launched a three pointer that was off the mark. However, the home team secured one of their 14 offensive rebounds on the night and Laramie Miller shot the ball as time expired. The ball banked off the glass and through the net to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Hollins stole the opening tip of the extra frame but it was Salem the gained the first lead of the "fifth" period. A Valencia three pointer gave Hollins a one point lead but the Spirits quickly regained the advantage and held off a late Hollins rally as a Parfitt shot missed the mark in the game's final seconds giving Salem College a hard fought, 86-83, win.
Valencia finished with 27 points and seven assists while Parfitt notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) added 17 points and five rebounds while Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) came off the bench to net 11 points and five rebounds.
Quntashea Lewis and Mikayla Seivers each scored 22 points with Lewis grabbing a game high 17 rebounds.
Hollins will end the first semester with a 3-5 overall record and look to get back on track when they travel to Averett University on Saturday, January 2nd.
