ODAC Opener For Hollins

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - Late Tuesday afternoon marked the opening of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play for a Hollins team that started the season with a 3-2 record in non-conference action.  Hollins played host to Bridgewater College in the ODAC debut of new head coach Jenny Logan.  Logan was a standout for the Eagles and looked to take down her alma mater in her first ODAC game.

Hollins raced out to a nine point, first quarter lead, but the Eagles rallied to cut the Hollins advantage to just four, 21-17, at quarter's end.  The second period saw foul trouble and offensive struggles for the home team as Bridgwater used a 20-4 run to dominate the second frame and take a double figure lead into the half, 37-25.  Hollins played much better in the second half but the damage of the second period was too much as Bridgewater slowly increased their lead and pulled away for the ODAC opening victory, 81-53.

First-year Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO) paced the home team with 20 points on 8-15 shooting.  Junior Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) posted her third double-double of the season as the guard recorded 17 points and a game high 13 rebounds.  Parfitt came into the opener with the third most points and second most rebounds in the conference.  Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) added seven points and three assists while fellow first-year Deana Campbell (Nashville, TN) scored five off the bench.

Bridgewater College enjoyed a huge advantage on the glass by out-rebounding Hollins 52-30, leading to 16 second chance opportunities for the evening.  Jessi Strom hit three of her game high four, three pointers, in a first half run that all but erased the home team's nine point lead.  Strom led a balanced Eagle attack with 16 points while Cassidy Burkholder, 13, and Briana Moore, 12, joined the senior in double digits.  Burkholder and Jessalyn Monday each grabbed eight rebounds with Moore and Oshene Kelly adding seven.

Hollins will take a few days to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the court next Wednesday, December 7th.  Washington and Lee will be the opponent in Hollins' second attempt to record their first ODAC victory.
