Box Score After opening the 2015-16 season with three straight home games, the Hollins University basketball team traveled to our nation's capital for their first road game of the season. Hollins wore their away uniforms for the first time when they faced off with Trinity DC on Friday night. After the two teams battled back and forth for the first 20 minutes, Hollins used a big third quarter to pull away for a 74-62 victory.
The home team held the lead for much of the opening period. Trailing by four with just over one minute left to play, first-year guard Nikki Valencia(Pearland, TX)knocked down a three pointer to pull Hollins to within one. Seconds later, Jewellanna Parfitt(Roanoke, VA)scored her seventh point of the quarter to stake Hollins to a one point lead. Trinity opened the second stanza with a four point run to retake the lead. The two teams traded the lead back and forth until Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV)scored with 3:16 left to play in the half giving the visitors a lead that they would not give back the rest of the way. Hollins built their advantage to double-digits during the third quarter and held on to pick up their second win of the season, evening their record at 2-2.
First-year forward Sally Sroge (Louisville, CO)paced Hollins with a game high 20 points in her first collegiate game. Parfitt continued her nice start to the season by adding 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and six steals. Valencia netted 18 points and five assists with Smith scoring 12 and handing out four helpers. Hollins turned over their hosts 31 times to help offset Trinity's 49-30 advantage on the glass.
Asha Curry and Blessing Hayes scored 16 points each with Hayes grabbing a game high 14 boards.
Hollins will continue their road trip when they visit Notre Dame MD tomorrow at 2:00pm.
