Roanoke, VA - Friday night marked the start of the 2015-16 basketball season with Hollins playing host to Dickinson College.  The game was not only the first of the season but the first game for Hollins under new head coach Jenny Logan.  Logan and her young squad looked to get the season started with a win over the visiting Red Devils.

Hollins got off to a slow start, seeing their guests race out to a 7-0 lead.  Hollins finally got on the board when Porsha Waddey (Roanoke, VA)scored her first basket in a Hollins uniform before stepping to the free throw line to complete the three point play.  Dickinson opened up the lead to 11 before the home team closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to make it 18-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.  When the second quarter got started, the Red Devils began to pull away as the Hollins offense couldn't find any consistency and failed to score for almost seven minutes.  Dickinson took a 34-19 lead into the half and came out on fire from long range, hitting on seven of 10 second half three's, to pull away for an easy victory, 71-36.

Junior Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led Hollins with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.  Waddey added 11 points and two steals while first-year point guard Nikki Valencia (Pearland, TX) recorded six points and, a team high, three assists. 

Behind five of eight shooting from beyond the arc, Helen Roberts netted a game high 21 points to go with three rebounds and four assists to pace the Red Devils.  Myonie Williamson, 15, and Sam Kennedy, 12, joined Roberts in double figures.

Hollins will have to get some quick rest and be ready to go as they host Mary Baldwin College tomorrow afternoon.  The game with the Squirrels is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm.
