Box Score Bridgewater, VA - Tuesday night saw the Hollins basketball team play their first conference road game of the 2014-15 season. Hollins traveled to Bridgewater looking for not only their first win of 2015, but their first ODAC win of the season. Both teams came into the matchup with identical 0-2 conference records.
The game started with each team finding it easy to score as they both were able to beat the others press and the game was tied four different times over the opening minutes of play. The home standing Eagles took advantage of several missed Hollins shots to build a double digit lead. Hollins fought back and began to get some much needed defensive stops as the cut the Bridgewater advantage three points. However the Eagles were able to get Hollins at arms length and carried 32-26 advantage into the break.
The second half saw Bridgwater once again push the lead to 10 points as Hollins started the second stanza a little sluggish. However, the visitors quickly rebounded and once again cut the Eagle lead to just two possessions. After struggling from the field int he first half, 29.4%, Hollins used better execution Bridgewater attack that saw the home team shot 56.3% on the night. The Eagles took a six point lead into the final two minutes of play and didn't allow Hollins to trim the lead by going 9-10 from the free throw line en route to securing a 78-68 ODAC victory.
Other than the hot shooting from Bridgewater, Hollins enjoyed a statistical advantage. Hollins turned over the Eagles 24 times, 16 via the steal and attempted 25 more field goals than their hosts. Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) led a trio of Hollins players in double digits when the sophomore guard scored 19 points on 50% shooting. Fellow guard Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) scored 15 points and handed out four assists before fouling out late in the contest. Senior forward Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) recorded her second straight solid all around effort by recording 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and a game high eight steals. Amber Markovitz (Branford, CT) added eight points and five rebounds while first-year center Hannah Moss (Mt. Holly, NC) registered six points and three rebounds.
All five Bridgewater starters reached double digits led by Cassidy Burkholder. Burkholder scored a game high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Heather Cantrell added 17 points and six rebounds while Oshene Kelly scored 14 points and seven rebounds. Jessi Strom scored 10 of her 12 points in the games final seven minutes of play. The Glenvar High School graduate hit back to back three pointers to give Bridgewater a 12 point lead and then went 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
Hollins returns home on Saturday when they play host to ODAC leading Eastern Mennonite at 2:00pm.
