Slow Second Half Start Dooms Hollins

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - Hollins played the second of four straight home games on Wednesday night when Guilford College came to Roanoke.  The home team came into the matchup with the Quakers looking to build off of their back to back strong defensive efforts.  Hollins led early but turnovers led to eight straight Quaker points that allowed Guilford to take a 10 point lead into the break.  Guilford used a 12-0 run to start the second half to all but eliminate any chance of a Hollins victory.  Hollins hit a barrage of three pointers over the game's final six minutes but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.  As the final horn sounded, it was the road team with a 66-48 conference victory.

Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) hit a three pointer to give Hollins a 5-2 lead as both teams struggled to find their range.  Over the next eight minutes of play, the Quakers went on a 17-4 run to push their advantage to double digits.  Hollins played their guests even the rest of the half.  Hollins started the second with four turnovers and five missed shots that allowed Guilford to put the game out of reach.

Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) paced Hollins with 13 points and six rebounds.  Parfitt added 10 points and was the only other Hollins player to reach double figures.  After being denied for much of the night, Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) hit a trio of three pointers to try close the gap.  Giselle Verville (Charlotte, NC) came off the bench to hit two of her five shots from long range en route to eight points.  Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) came off the bench to match Catron's seven rebounds and Haley Ridgely (Carson, NV) provided Hollins with some much needed size inside on her way to three points and four rebounds.

Senior Brittany Drew went 6-9 from the field, 4-5 from the three point line, to score 16 points and hand out four assists.  Kali Cuttaia equalled Drew's game high 16 points to go with six rebounds.  Leading scorer Anais Weatherly added eight points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals.  Point guard Jennette Taylor played a terrific all around game with seven points, nine rebounds, and five assists for the Quakers.

Hollins will continue their home stand on Saturday when they play host to Randolph College.  The game with the Wildcats is scheduled to tip at 2:00pm, but before the game we will take a moment to honor our two seniors.
