Bridgewater Rally Bests Hollins

Roanoke, VA -The Hollins basketball team played host to Bridgewater College on a cold Saturday afternoon.  The game was a rematch of an earlier 10 point Eagle victory from three weeks ago.  Hollins built a 10 point halftime lead, however, the Eagles rallied from down 12 to take lead a late in the matchup.  Bridgewater hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 67-59 ODAC win.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the game's opening stages.  Bridgewater enjoyed a five point lead, 13-8, at the 13:20 mark of the first half.  Consecutive three pointers by Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) allowed Hollins to retake the lead.  Hollins slowly built their advantage and with just 1:10 remaining before the break, pushed the lead to 12 points, 31-19.  A pair of Eagle free throws narrowed the gap to 10 at the half.

Each team struggled initially but once both teams found their range, the action heated up.  An up and down flurry of action saw 20 points scored in a three minute stretch.  At the end of the first five minutes in the second half, Hollins had weathered the Bridgewater attack and built the lead to 42-30 with 14:45 remaining.  From that moment on, the Eagles began to slowly wrestle the momentum away from the hosts and with just 4:12 left to play, the game was tied, 53-53.  Bridgewater outscored Hollins 14-6 down the stretch to complete the come from behind conference victory.

Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) scored 17 points to go with a game high 14 rebounds, five assists and two steals.  After 11 first half points, Catron finished with 13 while Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) added 14 points and seven rebounds before fouling out int he final minutes.  Auburn Smith (Las Vegas, NV) registered six points and four assists and Kaitlyn Taylor (Gastonia, NC) came off the bench to add four points and five rebounds.

Cassidy Burkholder had game highs in points, 19, and steals, 6, to help lead the comeback.  Hollins had no answer for Bridgewater's inside game led by Oshene Kelly and her 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Heather Cantrell added 12 points and eight rebounds while Jessalyn Monday grabbed 11 boards.

Hollins will continue their home stand with a visit from perennial ODAC power Guilford College on Wednesday night.  The game with the Quakers is scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
