Slow Start Dooms Hollins In Rematch

Box Score

Lexington, VA - In a rematch of a non-conferencegame from before the holiday break, Hollins traveled to Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon.  Hollins was looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Generals in early December.  The visitors got off to a slow start and couldn't complete the comeback, falling to Washington and Lee for a second time this season, 69-61.

Hollins got off to a slow start, scoring on just one of their first nine possessions, allowing the Generals to build an early six point lead.  Washington and Lee slowly built onto their lead and with 3:32 left int he first half, the Generals pushed the lead to 34-21.  Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) connected on a three pointer to spark a Hollins rally.  The road team scored eight of the final 12 points of the half to cut the W&L lead to nine points.

The second half once again saw Hollins struggle to find their range forcing a timeout at the 16:52 mark with the home team leading by 14 points, their largest lead of the afternoon.  Hollins quickly responded by scoring seven to the game's next nine points to cut the Generals advantage back to nine.  The two ODAC foes would trade baskets for much of the second half and Washington and Lee held a two possession lead with just six minutes left to play.  The Generals once again pushed the lead towards double digits.  Hollins would cut the lead to just five points late int he contest but could get no closer, falling to W&L for the second time.

Parfitt and Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) paced Hollins with 16 points each.  Catron added six rebounds and four assists while her fellow backcourt mate pulled down five rebounds and handed out a team high five assists.  In just her fifth collegiate game, Giselle Verville (Charlotte, NC) added 11 points on four of six shooting, including three for five from long range.  Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) and Amber Markovitz (Branford, CT) each scored nine points with Campbell leading the team with seven rebounds.

Jackie Clkifford paced a trio of Generals in double digits with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a two blocked shots.  Shelbi Hendricks added 14 points and a game high 11 rebounds while her fellow post player recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.

Hollins will wrap up their three game road trip with a cross town matchup against Roanoke College on Wednesday night.  The game with the Maroons will tip at 7:00pm in Salem, VA.
