Box Score Roanoke, VA - Saturday afternoon saw conference leading Eastern Mennonite come to town for an ODAC showdown. The Royals came into the matchup with a perfect 3-0 conference mark, while Hollins was looking for their first ODAC win of the season. Hollins would need to play a near perfect game to hang with the heavily favored Royals.
The first half saw both teams enjoy time playing from in front. Hollins enjoyed their largest lead of the afternoon when Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) hit a jumper at the 11:16 mark to make the score 19-14. Eastern Mennonite rallied to tie and then ultimately re-take the lead. Hollins wouldn't go away quietly and the home team surged past their visitors to take a 24-22 advantage with less than five minutes to play in the first half. However, turnovers and not being able to keep the Royals off the offensive glass started to take its' toll on the home team. Eastern Mennonite closed the half with a 14-2 run to take the game's first double digit lead, 36-26, into the break.
Eastern Mennonite wasted no time by starting the second half strong and with seven straight points built the lead to 17 and left Hollins in a huge hole that they would have to try to climb out of. The visitors from Harrisonburg kept pressing and running and as the half entered the midway point, built an insurmountable lead, 64-41.
Despite getting 17 points apiece by Campbell and Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA), Hollins could not overcome 22 turnovers and 20 second chance opportunities for the Royals. Amber Markovitz (Branford, CT) recorded nine points and eight rebounds while connecting on four of her five attempts from the field. Sophomore guard Taylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) added five points, nine rebounds, and four assists while Giselle Verville (Charlotte, NC) came off the bench to score five points.
Jess Rheinheimer came into the game averaging over 19 points per outing, scored a game high 23 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Shakeerah Sykes posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds and Marla zumFelde hit four shots from long range en route to 12 points.
Hollins will embark on a three game ODAC road trip starting on Tuesday with a visit to Emory & Henry. Hollins and the Wasps are scheduled to tip at 7:00pm.
