Hollins Goes To Overtime Against Generals

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - The Hollins University basketball team took the court for the final time in 2014 as they played host to Washington and Lee.  The matchup with the Generals is considered a non-conference game due to the unbalanced ODAC schedule.  Hollins had won the previous six meetings with their rivals from Lexington and looked poised to make it seven in a row but a late General comeback forced the game into overtime.  After failing to convert on the last possession of regulation, Hollins had another opportunity to win the game in overtime but once again the W&L defense held.  Despite two game wining opportunities, Hollins fell to the Generals 63-61.

The first half was a tightly contested affair with neither team leading the other by more than five points.  There were five lead changes and numerous ties as the two teams played down to the final horn, a Hollins miss that would have tied the score at the break.  Washington and Lee went to the locker room holding a slim 31-29 advantage.

The second half saw the Generals take advantage of some early Hollins miscues and pushed the lead to seven, the largest lead of the evening. Jewellanna Parfitt (Roanoke, VA) hit her second three pointer of the night to close the gap to four and after a W&L hoopHannah Moss (Mt. Holly, NC) scored six unanswered to tie the game at 38-38.  The two teams would swap the lead several more times down the stretch with neither team enjoying more than a two possession lead.  Hollins found themselves up 55-54 as the game entered it's final minuteTaylor Catron (Tazewell, VA) connected on a pair of free throws to push the Hollins advantage to three with 38 seconds remaining ont he clock.  Hollins got the stop they needed but Shelbi Hendricks knocked the rebound to her teammate to extend the possession.  After a W&L timeout, Paige Corvino penetrated towards the Hollins basket an kicked the ball to an open Emily Perszyk for an open look at a three pointer.  The shot was right on target and with 19 ticks left on the clock the game was tied at 57-57.  Hollins got the look that they wanted as senior Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, MD) drove to the basket but missed the contested shot and for the second time during the recent six game Hollins win streak, the two foes went to overtime.

Overtime started just like the second half with Washington and Lee building an early lead.  The Generals led by five before Hollins started to chip away at the lead.  Parfitt and Campbell each scored a basket and Hollins trailed by one point with one minute left in the first overtime.  Hollins once again got the stop they needed and with 10 seconds on theclock Campbell once again penetrated to the basket and just as in regulation, the shot would just not fall.  Hollins had to foul and after the Generals made one of two free throws, Hollins had one last chance but the long shot was off the mark and Washington and Lee prevailed with a hard fought 63-61 victory.

Parfitt recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Campbell had one of the best all around games of her career with 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists, six steals, and a pair of blocked shots.  Catron continued her offensive surge by netting 11 points including a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.  Moss and fellow post player Amber Markovitz (Branford, CT) gave the Hollins a solid inside presence.  Moss set her career high with 12 points while Markovitz added four points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Corvino went 3-4 from long range en route to a team high 15 points and Clifford added 12.  Hendricks finished with eight points and 10 rebounds and the Washington and Lee bench combined to add 14 points.

The two teams combined for 10 ties and 16 lead changes in the thrilling overtime matchup.

Hollins will take a break for exams and the holidays before returning to action after the turn of the calendar.  Hollins will play host to McDaniel on January 3rd and the game with the Green Terror will tip at 1:00pm.
