Hollins Unable To Earn Split

Box Score

Rocky Mount, NC - Sunday afternoon marked the second of two games to start the season for the Hollins basketball team.  After falling by three points to tournament host NC Wesleyan last night, Hollins was back in action less than 24 hours against a Greensboro College team that defeated ODAC member Emory & Henry in their season debut.

After losing a heartbreaker last night, a young Hollins team needed a good start as they went looking to gain a season opening split.  Greensboro wouldn't let Hollins get an early advantage as the Pride used a game opening 11-2 run to put the green and gold in an early hole.  Hollins played their season opener from the lead throughout much of the game, however today would be a much different story.  The young team got their first taste of playing from behind and found the going tough throughout the afternoon.  Greensboro was able to turn back each and every Hollins run en route to building a 33-18 halftime lead.

The break gave Hollins a chance to catch their breath and regroup in hopes of making an early run to start the second half.  A Greensboro turnover to start the second frame was just what Hollins was looking for but they were unable to get the start they needed to get back in the game.  It was Greensboro that once again used a run, 9-0, to start the half and all but put the game away.  Hollins wouldn't quit and used the opportunity to get their young roster some much needed game experience.  Hollins outscored their opponents 23-20 the rest of the way but it wasn't enough as Hollins fell to 0-2 by falling to the Pride 64-41.

Jewellanna Parfitt(Roanoke, VA)recorded her second straight double digit scoring effort despite struggling from the field.  Parfitt, last year's leading scorer, hit on just one of her six long range attempts but used the free throw line to help her lead the team with 11 points and six rebounds.  For her efforts Parfitt was named to the 2014 Jean Edge Classic All Tournament team.  Fellow sophomore Taylor Catron(Tazewell, VA) turned in another solid all around performance with eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.  First year forward Tiana Hatchett(Roxboro, NC)came off the bench to score seven points on two of five shooting.

Shanita Hampton and Josyln Spires led a balanced Greensboro attack.  Hampton scored a game high 17 points while Spires added 12.  Vontreece Hayes had seven points and a game high eight rebounds and Tiffani Stephens came off the bench to score seven points and help protect the rim with four blocks.

Hollins will be back on the road as they finish their season opening three game road trip with a game at Mary Baldwin on Thursday night.  Hollins and the Squirrels will tip at 7:00pm in Staunton, VA.
