ROANOKE, Va. – Things started well. But they didn't end well.
Hollins opened up their home slate on Tuesday with ODAC foe Eastern Mennonite. The green and gold took the first set from EMU but the Royals responded by winning the next three and sending Hollins to their second straight loss.
How It Happened
Hollins jumped out to an early lead in set one, using a pair of aces from Hannah Piatak and an Amanda Mink kill to pull ahead 10-5. After the two team traded points and EMU made a run to pull within one at 13-12, HU responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by kills from Hannah Arthur, Kiki Speights and Kenna Esquibel, to lead 18-12. EMU clawed back into the match, eventually tying things at 19, 20 and 22-all but a Speights kill, and two Arthur kills, gave Hollins the 25-23 set win.
Eastern Mennonite jumped on Hollins right off the bat in set two, jumping out to a quick 6-1 lead. HU responded with a few points but anytime they gained any momentum, the Royals snuffed it out. HU was able to pull within two at 10-8 but that was as close as they would get as EMU closed the set on a 14-6 run to tie things at one set apiece.
Neither team could get any momentum going in the third set as they traded points to the tune of 10 ties during the set. HU got down 23-19 late, but a pair of EMU errors, along with a Mink ace and an Arthur kill tied things at 23. EMU won the next point and was serving for the set, but a Speights kill tied things again before the Royals took the last two points of the set and went ahead 2-1.
Hollins never really got things going in the final set, trailing from the outset. They would get as close as seven at 13-6, but couldn't rally as EMU took the final set 25-13 and the match 3-1.
The loss sends HU to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC.
Offensively, Hollins was led by Arthur's 11 kills. Tyler Sesker finished with nine kills while Speights added seven. Zoe Brooks and Casey Mahan were once again a formidable assist duo, finishing with 17 and 16, respectively. Piatak led the way defensively, ending the night with a match-high 22 digs.
HU will continue their trek through the ODAC on Saturday with a tri-match at Bridgewater College. They'll face off with the Eagles at 11 am before taking on Greensboro in a non-conference matchup at 1 pm.
