Basketball Grinds out Gritty Road Win

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Sometimes you thrive and sometimes you survive.

And survive is exactly what Hollins basketball did on Thursday as the Green and Gold overcame a fourth quarter deficit to take down Methodist 58-54 to pick up their fourth straight win, their first four-game win streak in team history.

How It Happened

Kayla Surles and Serena Lytton hit back-to-back shots to put Hollins (6-3, 2-2 ODAC) on the board early. The teams traded baskets before Methodist (1-7, 0-1 USA South) took a 9-8 lead. Kayla Surles drilled a three to put Hollins back on top and, after back-and-forth points, HU took a 15-14 lead into the second quarter.

Neither team could maintain a lead for most of the second quarter until, with the game tied at 22, the Monarchs used an 8-4 run to take a 30-25 lead into the half. For the half, Hollins shot just 32% (10-31) from the field and were just 4-10 from the free throw line.

MU extended their lead to start the third before Kayla Surles hit another three to pull back within five. Back-to-back buckets from Lytton and Brianna Lohrmann, along with a Kayla Surles backet and-one pulled Hollins within one. After another MU bucket, Keenan Surles hit a three to tie things at 38 until a free throw 1:03 left gave MU a one-point lead heading into the final frame.

Methodist kept and extended their lead to five before Lenah Clements hit a three to make it 47-45. After trading points, with HU trailing by one, Lytton hit the shot of the game, a three that bounced around the rim before falling through. That shot gave Hollins a two-point lead, their first since the 5:04 mark of the second quarter. Yasmine Tyler added a layup then, after a Monarch basket, Lytton made another three to give HU a five point cushion. It would prove to be the game winner as Methodist missed their final three shots and made just 2-6 free throws in the final 1:31.

Kayla Surles had a monster game, leading all scorers with 24 points in 40 minutes on 8-16 shooting. She also had six assists and four rebounds. Lytton finished with 14 points, including the game winner, as well as six rebounds and four steals.

Stat of the Game
