Hollins Snags Second ODAC Win

Hollins Snags Second ODAC Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - People usually head to the beach to relax, to get away from work. On Saturday, the Hollins basketball team headed to the beach to put in work.

The Green and Gold used a 16-5 second quarter and seven free throws in the final frame to pick up a 71-63 win over Virginia Wesleyan.

How It Happened

Hollins (4-3, 2-2 ODAC) got on the board first in the game when Serena Lytton buried a three off an assist from Kayla Surles. Va. Wesleyan (2-7, 1-3 ODAC) would battle back and the two teams flip flopped leads throughout the quarter. But after a Yasmine Tyler layup gave HU a 12-11 lead, VWU hit a bucket and took a one-point lead into the second.

It took two minutes for Hollins to get on the board in the second quarter, but Lytton hit a jump shot to re-take the lead, once HU would not relinquish. Keenan Surles added a three and Kayla Surles made a pair of free throws as Hollins started the quarter on a 7-0 run. It was four minutes into the quarter before the Marlins scored and in total, the Green and Gold defense held VWU to just 12.5% (2-16) shooting from the field including 0-7 from three. Hollins scored the final seven points of the period and took a 28-18 lead into the break.

Va. Wesleyan was able to pull within five at 30-25 to start the third, but a Lenah Clements layup and-one extended the Marlins deficit back to eight. Anytime, it seemed, VWU would sink a shot to try to get back into the game, Hollins would answer with a big bucket of their own. The Marlins were able to scratch and claw to back within five, however, heading to the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded baskets in the fourth until, with just under five minutes left and Va. Wesleyan trailing by six, Kayla Surles iced the game with a three. Hollins hit all six of their free throws in the final 2:47 and hung on to pick up their second ODAC win of the season.

The Green and Gold was led by Kayla Surles' game-high 19 points to go along with eight assists. Lytton and Clements added 16 and 15, respectively, as the two first-years continue to have success in the early going. Tyler had 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

Stat of the Game

-The Hollins defense held Va. Wesleyan to just 11.8% shooting from three for the game.
