All Five Starters in Double Figures as Hollins Downs Washington & Lee

ROANOKE, Va. - Hollins wasn't losing this game.

Even though the Green and Gold hadn't beaten the Generals since 2014. Even after being down seven at the end of the first and down four at the half. And even though HU shot just 29% from three. Hollins wasn't losing this game.

A big third quarter and all five Hollins starters scoring in double-figures lead HU to an 82-68 win over Washington and Lee.

How It Happened

W&L (3-4, 2-2 ODAC) got on the board first before Lenah Clements scored five straight points to give Hollins (3-3, 1-2 ODAC) a 7-2 lead. The two teams traded buckets to 11 when W&L went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-13 lead after one.

But just like Sunday's matchup with Guilford, Hollins rallied after the initial frame. The Generals pulled ahead 23-15 to start the second when a 7-0 HU run, highlighted by a Clements jump shot, a Serena Lytton steal, layup and-one and a Brianna Lohrmann brought Hollins within one. Then, with W&L leading 29-26, Sydney Strange hit a huge three to tie things at 29 and a Keyazia Taylor steal and layup gave HU a two-point lead. The Generals would end the half on a 6-0 run, however, to take a four-point lead into the locker room.

Then the third quarter happened.

Trailing by four, back-to-back baskets from Kayla Surles and Taylor tied the game at 35. After a pair of W&L free throws, Hollins went on an 8-0 run to re-take the lead, which they wouldn't relinquish. In total, HU doubled up the Generals in the third, outscoring them 28-14 and held a 59-49 advantage heading into the fourth.

Taylor and Kayla Surles started the fourth exactly as they started the third, hitting back-to-back jumpers to extend the Green and Gold lead to 14. Hollins would lead by as many as 18 in the final quarter before W&L scored down the stretch and made the final deficit 14.

Kayla Surles led all scorers with 17 and added nine assists. Lytton dropped 15 and Taylor picked up her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards. Yasmine Tyler had 14 for her sixth-straight game with at least 10 points while Clements added 13.
