Hollins Runners Face Tough Field At Virginia Tech

Event: Cross Country - Hollins at the 2018 Virginia Tech Invitational (Blacksburg, VA)

The lead: The Hollins University cross country team faced outside competition for the first time on Friday evening. The team traveled to Virginia Tech to run in the nine team invite. Hollins was one of two NCAA DIII schools in a field that included DI programs; Virginia Tech, Radford, Liberty, VMI, and Longwood as well as Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) favorite, Washington and Lee.

The result: Hollins finished ninth in a field that included serveal NCAA DI and II programs

How it happened: The host Hokies completed the 4K course with the top three finishers en route to winning the event while Liberty finished runner up and ODAC power W&L taking third. Hollins completed the meet with a total time of 1:37.31.

Hollins notes:

  • First-year Evelyn Foster paced Hollins with a time of 17:25.4, earning 49th place points in the field of 94 runners. Foster finished just clear of a pair of runners from W&L.
  • Senior Debra Henke (19:03.2) secured 59th place points
  • First-year Kacie Shifflett rounded out the top three for Hollins with a time of 19:25.2

What's next: Hollins will travel to Staunton to compete in the Golden Acorn Invitational (hosted by Mary Baldwin University) on Saturday, September 8th.
