Blacksburg, VA - For the first time this season, the Hollins cross country team was in action when they traveled to Blacksburg to compete in the, 14 team, Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Hollins was one of six DIII teams in the field. The remainder of the field consisted of DI schools (Va. Tech, Florida St., Ohio, Morehead, St., Akron, East Tennessee St.) and DII competitor King University. Of her DIII opponents, Hollins finished fourth, ahead of Ferrum and Sweet Briar.
The meet was the inaugural race of the 2017 campaign as Hollins had to withdraw from their first race due to travel complications. Senior Jhovanna Salmeron once again paced the Hollins harriers finishing with a time of 26:42.5 and picking up 67th place points in the field of 116 runners. Debra Henke brought home 76th place points in her first collegiate race. Also competing for the green and gold for the first time was Francesca Reilly. Reilly finished 20 seconds clear of a Sweet Briar runner and helped to lead Hollins to a 16 point win over her arch rivals. Returners Kalyn Chapman and Allie Helmbrecht rounded out the top five for Hollins.
Hollins will return to action in two weeks as they are scheduled to compete in the 34th annual Greensboro Invitational on September 30th.
