Roanoke, VA - After finishing up her first non-conference part of the schedule, the Hollins volleyball team hosted Randolph College to kick off Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday night. Hollins started the season 3-0 for the first time in decades and brought a winning record, 4-3, into ODAC play.
Both Hollins and Randolph came into the matchup having tasted victory in the final match last Saturday at the Maroon Classic. Hollins bested Mary Baldwin while the WildCats downed Ferrum in their tournament finale. During the opening stages, the two conference foes traded points. It was the visitors from Lynchburg that would enjoy the first advantage of the evening when they opened up a 6-3 lead. Every time the WildCats looked to pull away, the home team earned a stop and continued to stay close. However, Randolph finished the opening set on a 7-1 run to earn a 1-0 lead, 25-14. The second stanza was all Randolph as the road team raced out to 7-1 lead and never let Hollins get into the set, 25-9. The third set was much more tightly contested with Randolph once again getting off to a fast start, 5-0. This time Hollins had an answer and tied the set at 8-8. Hollins, however, was never able to pull ahead and it was Randolph that left with the 3-0 ODAC win taking the finale 25-19.
Courtney Chappell led the Hollins offense with seven kills, four digs, and a service ace while first-year middle Charlie Vollmers added five kills and a block. Kiki Speights finished off four of her 14 attacks without committing an error. Speights also recorded three assisted blocks. Setter Sarah Freeman led in both assists (13) and digs (11).
The WildCats got 11 kills from Autumn Troxell and seven kills from Taylor Webb. Lauren Morgan registered five kills and a pair of solo blocks with Kennedy Webb picking up 13 of the team's 54 digs.
Hollins will continue ODAC play on Friday when they play host to Eastern Mennonite at 7:00pm.
