Salem, VA - After suffering her first defeat of the season earlier in the day, the Hollins volleyball team was looking to get back on track against Salem College. The match with the Spirits was the second of the day in the 2017 Roanoke College Maroon Classic.
The two long-time foes played a close, back-and-forth, first set that saw 12 ties and several lead changes. Hollins carried a 22-21 lead into the final stages but it was the Spirits that finished the frame on a 4-1 run, including the final three points of the set. After falling in a close 25-23 opener, Hollins found it tough to get over the disappointment and never really threatened in set number two, falling 25-12. The third stanza was once again closely contested. Hollins rallied from an early deficit to take a 21-20 advantage. Salem would rattle off five straight to close out the set, 25-21, and take the match, 3-0.
Kiki Speights posted seven kills and Brie Faircloth registered five kills to go with her 11 digs with Courtney Chappell and Charlie Vollmers adding six kills apiece. Sarah Freeman led Hollins with 13 assists and Hannah Piatak had five helpers and a match high 17 digs.
Salem enjoyed a 43 to 30 hitting advantage led by Kathryn O'Connell with nine and Taylor Moulton adding eight. Hannah Delcamp assisted on 20 kills and Maggie Hawks accounted for 10 digs.
Hollins will be back in action tomorrow. They face Methodist at 1:00pm before finishing up the two-day event with a rematch against Mary Baldwin at 5:00pm.
