Marlins Too Much For Hollins

Marlins Too Much For Hollins

Roanoke, VA - The final day of home volleyball for a Hollins squad started with a visit from Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) power Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins have advanced to the final four of the two most recent ODAC volleyball championship tournaments and brought a 4-4 conference mark into the first of three matches on the Hollins court.

In order for Hollins to pull off the upset on Saturday morning, they would need a good start against the Marlins. However, after seeing the two teams trade points early, 4-4, it was the visitors from the beach that seized the momentum and took a sizeable lead, 13-6. Setter Emilee Pierson stepped behind the service line for Va. Wesleyan and didn't give up her serve until the road team had pushed their advantage to 22-6 and took the opening set. Set number two got started harmlessly enough, but after a 2-2 start, Hollins once again began to fall behind. The home team did score four of the final six points but it wasn't enough as the Marlins took a 2-0 lead, 25-11. The third set was more of the same as VWC out-hit Hollins 43-19 and 13 Hollins receiving errors never allowed them to get into the matchup. Wesleyan took the third, 25-11, and the match.

Casey Mahan had two kills, 14 assists, and four digs while leading hitter Deja Hadden posted 10 kills. In the back row, Amanda Mink and Courtney Chappell each recorded 10 digs.

Tiffany Barrett, a perennial All ODAC selection, led the Marlins with 11 kills, two service aces, and a block. Colleen Smith added six kills and five digs while a trio of Va. Wesleyan setters combined for 38 assists.

Hollins will have a match off before hosting Greensboro College in the tri-match finale at 3:00pm.
