Roanoke, VA - The Hollins volleyball team played host to Emory & Henry College on Thursday night. It was Faculty Appreciation night at the gym as the team took a moment to take the faculty and staff members that make their Hollins experience fulfilling. The Wasps came into the matchup with a 4-4 conference record while the home team went searching to pick up their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory of the season.
Emory & Henry roared out to an early advantage, taking 11 of the first 13 points of the night. On the back of an 11 to six kill advantage, E&H took opening frame, 25-12. With all the momentum squarely on the Wasp's side, the visitors once again raced out to a big early lead, 14-4. Hollins settled in an started to play much better but an 11-4 run to end the set gave Emory & Henry a 2-0 lead. The home team got a much better start in the third set as the match remained tied, 13-13, at the midway point. However, the Wasps outscored their hosts, 12-5, to finish off the match, 3-0.
McKinley Isaacs recorded three kills on her 10 attacks to lead Hollins with a .200 hitting percentage for the night. Deja Hadden used a big third set to finish the night with seven kills while Courtney Chappell killed four of her 23 attacks. Ki'Ana Speights lead the defense at the net with two solo and an assisted block and Amanda Mink registered 11 digs on the back row. Setter Casey Mahan assisted on 18 of Hollins 19 kills.
Emory & Henry used a huge, 45-19, kill advantage to take the ODAC matchup. Ali Singleton had a match high 12 kills with Kennady Thomason adding eight and Tristen Pennington registeringsix. Sam McCauley led with 21 assists and Abigail Hinshaw recorded 16 digs.
Hollins will wrap up her regular season home schedule with a tri-match on Saturday. Hollins will face Virginia Wesleyan at 11:00am. Virginia Wesleyan will then face Greensboro at 1:00pm and Hollins will finish off the afternoon against the Pride at 3:00pm.
