Roanoke, VA - Wednesday afternoon marked the annual matchup of cross-town rivals when Roanoke College made the short trip to Hollins for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The Maroons took two of the three doubles matches for an early advantage in advance of sweeping the singles matches for the 8-1 win.
Hollins stayed close in the early stages as Olivia Dannon and Kateri Johnson won their fourth consecutive match by the score of 8-2. The duo has won four of their five matches as a team and currently have a 3-1 ODAC record on the season.
In singles action, Johnson raced out to a 3-0 lead before a Roanoke rally would take the first set 6-4. At the #2 spot, Amelia Verkerk fell in the opening set, 6-2, but mounted a rally in the second set to tie the score at 6-6. In the seven point tie-breaker, Verkerk played her opponent point for point. With the score 6-5, the Maroons Catherine Lee took the final point to secure the win.
Hollins will head out on a two match road trip starting with a visit to Randolph college on Friday afternoon.
