Hilton Head Island, SC - The final of a four match in seven day road trip for Hollins took place on Wednesday morning. Hollins played Carroll University in each teams final match at the Spring Tennis Fest. The event, hosted by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) on Hilton Head Island, featured several college and universities from around the country.
After splitting their first two matches at Hilton Head, Hollins looked to come home with a winning mark as they faced the Pioneers. Carroll took control of the matcch early as they won at the top two doubles spots by dropping just one game. At the #3 spot, Kateri Johnson and Liz Rochow found themselves in a tight contest, 2-1, in the opening stages. After the Carroll duo opened the advantage to 7-1, Hollins began a comeback and took the next two games. However, in the end the Pioneers held on to take a 3-0 lead heading into individual play.
Amelia Verkerk (#2) and Olivia Dannon (#5) each had first sets that came down to the final points, with each coming up just short 6-4. At the #1 spot, Jhovanna Salmeron dropped the opener before rallying to put herself a break away from evening up the second set late in the match. The senior had an advantage and forced two straight games to deuce but couldn't put her opponent away. Johnson gave Hollins best chance of securing a point when she forced a third set tie-breaker. After seeing her Carroll counterpart come back to take the first set, 7-5, Johnson dominated the second set, 6-1, to set up the third and decisive set. In the breaker, Johnson fell behind and couldn't complete the rally, coming up short of the comeback, 10-5.
Hollins will travel to back the their snow covered campus on Friday to rest and enjoy the remaining days of Spring Break. The Green and Gold will have over a week to prepare for an April that includes the bulk of their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule.
