Greensboro, NC - The Hollins tennis team kicked off a four match in seven day road swing with a stop in Greensboro. The Green and Gold would face Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe, Guilford College in advance of driving to Hilton Head for a trio of matches next week. The winner of the match with the Quakers would pick up their first ODAC win of the season.
Hollins suffered a heartbreaking, 5-4, loss to Ferrum earlier in the week and responded in a big way by taking all three doubles matches against Guilford. Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy continued their quick start to the season by picking up their third win in five tries at #2 doubles, 8-0. At the #1 spot, Jhovanna Salmeron and Kate Woodruff were challenged early but pulled away for a comfortable, 8-5, win. Kateri Johnson and Valerie Sargeant made it 3-3 in the tandem matchups by picking up a 8-0 win at the #3 spot.
The switch to individual play did little to slow down the Hollins momentum. The first match to come to a conclusion was at the #6 spot with Liz Rochow cruising to a 6-0 and 6-0 finish. Olivia Dannon ended any hopes of a Quaker comeback as the sophomore handled the #4 match without dropping a game, 6-0 and 6-0. Johnson added another shutout with a straight sets win at the #3 spot. Salmeron (#1), Verkerk (#2), and Sargeant (#5) each finished off their opponents by the indentical score of 6-2 and 6-0.
The sweep of Guilford earned Hollins her first conference win of the season and they currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the league standings.
