Roanoke, VA - The Hollins tennis team hosted their final home match in advance of embarking on a seven day road trip over Spring Break. Ferrum College was the opponent as the Green and Gold appeared poised for their first win of the season.

Hollins split the matches at #1 and #2 doubles with the duo of Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy pushing their home doubles record to 2-0 for the 2018 campaign. The home team was looking to take a 2-1 lead with the #3 doubles match leaning in favor of Hollins, 4-3. However, the Panther tandem rattled off four consecutive games to take a 7-4 advantage. Hollins would hold serve but couldn't complete the comeback and fell 8-5, allowing the visitors to take a 2-1 edge into singles play.

Hollins would enjoy early success in the solo matches. Olivia Dannon stormed back from 2-5 to take the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-5. Dannon would even the match at 2-2 with a 6-0 win in set number two. Verkerk would push Hollins into the lead with a straight sets win at #2, 6-3 and 6-4. A Ferrum rally from down one set to love at #6 would once again see the match tied. Hollins would once again take a lead, 4-3, after Kateri Johnson finished off her opponent at #3 singles, 6-0 and 7-6, after winning the tie-breaker 7-5. The Panthers would hold serve at #4 setting up a winner-take-all match at #1 singles. Jhovanna Salmeron dropped the first set, 3-6, but rallied to push the 2nd frame to a tie breaker that went in the senior's favor, 8-6. A 10 point tie breaker would decide the match and after splitting the first six points, Ferrum's Morgan Scott seized control with four consecutive points. Salmeron would answer but Scott held her off for the third set win to seal the match.

Hollins will travel to Greensboro on Friday afternoon to face Guilford College before heading to Hilton Head for four matches next week.
