Lynchburg, VA - The Hollins tennis team not only kicked of the 2018 season on Wednesday afternoon, they also competed against Old Dominion Athletic Conference Competition for the first time. Hollins traveled to face Lynchburg College in their season debut. The Hornets came into play having already competed in four matches and the Hollins nerves and lack of match seasoning were more than enough for the Hornets to take advantage. After sweeping the three doubles matches, Lynchburg made it a perfect 9-9 in defeating their ODAC rivals.
The #2 doubles tandem of Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy raced out to a 2-1 advantage and had their opponents down love-40 in each of the next two games. However, the Lynchburg duo rallied to fend off game and break points en route to a come-from-behind 8-4 victory. At #1 doubles the newly formed duo of Jhovanna Salmeron and Kate Woodruff also enjoyed an early lead before the Hornets once again rallied to take the point.
In singles play, Snoddy pushed her opponent deep into each game before falling 3 and 3. Kateri Johnson was the last match of the evening as she and Sarah Wyly went stroke for stroke for close to an hour and a half, pushing almost every game to deuce. In the end, Wyly finally pulled away to end the match.
Hollins will host her first match of the season on Tuesday when Southern Virginia comes to Roanoke for a 3:00pm start.
