Fayetteville, NC - Sunday afternoon marked the conclusion of the three day Methodist University Invitational Tennis Tournament. Hollins was in action with five other schools, competing in three doubles and six singles draws.
The three doubles draws were played on Friday, the opening day of competition. Hollins best finish was in the #3 Doubles draw when Kateri Johnson and Valerie Sargeant won their first match before falling in the semifinals. The first-time duo won a hard fought third place match, 9-7. In the #2 draw, Olivia Dannon and Kate Woodruff rebounded from an opening loss to earn a berth in the consolation finals with a 9-7 win over the team from Averett.
The six singles brackets started play on Saturday before finishing up the final matches on Sunday. Amelia Verkerk fell to the #1 from Bluefield College but came back on Sunday to win the seventh place match, 6-0 and 6-1. Dannon also won her seventh place match at #2 Singles when she bested Breanna Williams from Pfeiffer College, 6-4 and 6-2. In the #4 Flight, Liz Rochow gave Hollins a third win the seventh place matches when the senior picked up a 7-5 and 6-2 victory. Sarah Jordan Snoddy went 1-1 in the #5 Singles draw, falling in the finals of the consolation draw. Sargeant and Woodruff each competed in the 6th Flight. Sargeant earned Hollins best individual finish by going 2-1 and winning the fifth place match, 6-1 and 6-2. Woodruff gave the green and gold one final seventh place win by winning, 4 and 0, over Ashley Thornton from Averett.
Hollins will compete one more time this fall when they travel to play on the Ferrum College Tournament on October 7th.
