Roanoke, VA - One day after the originally scheduled match, Hollins hosted Bridgewater College on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. Heavy rains postponed the match yesterday so the Eagles made the trip south on Interstate 81 for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. Bridgewater took the three doubles matches and carried that momentum to an 8-1 conference win.
The Eagles took #3 doubles and shortly after added another point with a win at #2. At the top spot, the Hollins duo of Jhovanna Salmeron and Htet Myat San were entrenched in a tight match. Trailing, 4-3, the Hollins tandem had a chance to win each of the next two games, but the Bridgewater team held off Hollins to take the games and the match, 8-3. In singles play, Hollins got a much needed win at #3 when Amelia Verkerk overcame a rough start to force a third set tie breaker. Verkerk got shutout in the opener but rallied to take the second set, 6-4. In the 10 point tie breaker, the junior broke open a close match by winning the third set, 10-7, to take the match.
Hollins will step out of conference on Thursday afternoon. Weather permitting, Hollins will travel to Southern Virginia for a 4:00pm start.
