Roanoke, VA - On the final afternoon before Spring Break, the Hollins tennis team hosted Randolph College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The WildCats came into the match looking for their first conference win of the season, while Hollins hoped to continue to stay ahead of their guests in the ODAC standings.
In the three doubles matches, Randolph earned a sweep. After besting Hollins, 8-0, at #1 and #2 doubles, the WildCats had a tougher time at #3. The team of Kateri Johnson and Elizabeth Rochow made their opponents earn the point. However, after several long points and rallies, the Hollins duo fell to give Randolph the 3-0 lead. As the clouds continued to gather, the two ODAC foes went into singles play. The visitors from Lynchurg put the match away with a pair of sweeps at #1 and #2 singles. At #3, Amelia Verkerk pushed Jenna Sweet to several deuce situations but in the end, Randolph earned another win. Hollins was unable to rally at the other singles spots and Randolph went home with a 9-0 ODAC win.
The Hollins team will look to head to warmer weather over the break. They will leave tomorrow for four matches in Hilton Head over the next several days. Hollins first match will take place on Sunday when they challenge St. Olaf from Minnesota.
