Forest, VA - The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released their 2017-18 Women's Swimming Preseason Poll on Friday morning. With the addition of Roanoke, Randolph, and Virginia Wesleyan, the total number of competitors in the conference has increased from nine to 12 for the upcoming season. The coaches voted and Hollins was picked sixth in the 12 team field.
After finishing fifth at the 2017 ODAC Swim Championships, Hollins looks to use a young, talented roster to try to move up the standings at the end of year meet. Senior Dani Raymond is one of three returning swimmers from a roster that saw seven different swimmers earn berths in the finals back in February. Raymond is entering her third season as the primary distance swimmer for head coach Patrick Richardson. The Fredericksburg native has amassed a stellar record of securing top three points in the freestyle distance events over the past two seasons. Junior Maya Schattgen made her mark last season in the backstroke and relay events. Schattgen finished 14th and 12th in last seasons championship meet in the 100 and 200 Backstroke as well as a top 10 in the 100 Butterfly. The third returner, Alex Sanchez, is back for her sophomore campaign after making a huge impact one season ago. Sanchez just missed a top 10 in the 200 Butterfly at ODACs as well as earning finals appearances in 100 and 200 freestyle. Her eight place finish in the 200 was best individual finish for the green and gold in the 2017 Championships. Six talented newcomers round out a roster that has already experienced success during the 2017-18 season.
Last weekend, Hollins competed at the Converse Women's Invitational and recorded the highest finish by a DIII school, as well as defeating Sweet Briar and Guilford during the two-day event. Hollins will get a chance to see where they stand in the conference this weekend when they travel to Lexington to face their league competitors in the 2017 ODAC Relay Meet, hosted by Washington and Lee. The 2017-18 schedule features a pair of home quad-meets. Hollins will host Emory & Henry, Randolph, and Virginia Wesleyan on November 18th. After the calendar turns, Greensboro, Guilford, and Roanoke will come to campus for Hollins home finale on January 20th. The 2018 ODAC Championship Meet is scheduled for February 9th-11th.
