Forest, Va - The Hollins University soccer team reported to campus yesterday and began preseason practice on Saturday morning. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released it's 2017 Women's Soccer Preseason Poll this afternoon and Hollins was picked to finish 13th, in a vote by the league's coaches.
The team made huge improvements in a 2016 season that saw much improved numbers in terms of goals and goals against and look to continue that trend going into the 2017 campaign. Six players return and will be looked upon to provide leadership and stability for a program that is trying to move up the conference standings.
The six returning starters will give Hollins the most experienced core that head coach Robin Ramirez has had during his time at the helm. Senior Audrey Haisley will be the lone four-year player on the roster and will once again held anchor the defense. Juniors Cierra Morris, MacKenzie Roberts, Mira Ritola, and Mallory Jengo will play all over the field and look to help mentor the newcomers. Miranda Springston was second on the team in scoring (2016) and first in shots on goal and gives Hollins a solid scoring threat from the midfield.
The season kicks off with a pair of home matches against Wesleyan (Ga.) and Greensboro. After a three game road swing, Hollins will wrap up the month with three of her four matches at home, including the ODAC opener when Bridgewater College makes the trip on September 23rd. The season will wrap up in late October with a trip across town to face Roanoke College on the 25th before hosting their rivals from Sweet Briar in the regular season finale on the 28th.
