Sweet Briar, VA - The Hollins soccer team traveled to face their arch rivals from Sweet Briar in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. After a one year hiatus, Hollins took the field against the Vixens in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. With both teams eliminated from the conference tournament, the two long time rivals squared off with pride and bragging rights on the line.
The afternoon started with the two teams trading opportunities. At the 16 minute mark, the home team got the scoring started when Alicia Wooten took a long pass and dribbled in on the Hollins keeper for a one on one chance. Sweet Briar notched a second goal some 10 minutes later and with about 10 minutes left on the first half clock, Wooten added her second score of the half. At halftime, the home standing Vixens enjoyed a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 3-0 lead on the score board. Hollins quickly got ont he board in the second half to cut the deficit, 3-1. However, five minutes later Sweet Birar scored once again to put the match out of reach. As the clocked ticked down and the season came to an end, Hollins had come up short against her rivals, 4-1.
First-year Alexis McDonough scored her fourth goal of the season about midway through the second half. McDonough and Ciera Morris led the visitors with three shots apiece. Keeper Hannah Armstrong registered 11 stops, giving her 279 saves ont he season, tops in the ODAC.
Wooten scored twice while assisting on a third Sweet Briar goal. Des'rae Davis netted the eventual game winner and Cassidy Bodkin added a late score. The Vixens keeper recorded four stops on the afternoon.
The young Hollins team will look to build on their experiences this season when they enter their spring season in 2017.
