Senior Day For Hollins Soccer

Senior Day For Hollins Soccer

Box Score

Roanoke, VA - Saturday afternoon saw cross town rival Roanoke College come to Hollins for an early afternoon matchup.  It was the final weekend home match for Hollins so before they match the two seniors were honored.  Senior defenders Brandi Akers (Danville, VA) and Bonnie Jo Blevins (Mars Hill, NC) were recognized for their commitment and dedication to the Hollins soccer program.

The game started rather slowly as neither team really got much going and the score remained 0-0 for the first 10 minutes.  After that point, the Roanoke offense began to seize control of the match and put tremendous pressure on the Hollins defense.  A pair of Maroons goals scored in a one minute span gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.  About 10 minutes later, Roanoke was at it again as they netted three more goals and with 15 minutes left to play in the first half, it was the Maroons that enjoyed a comfortable lead, 5-0.  With the clock winding down, Roanoke added a back breaking goal with just 21 seconds left to play before the break and took a big lead into halftime.

The second half saw a spirited Hollins defense rise to the occasion time after time, turning away their visitors from just down the road.  Roanoke was able to finally break through and add a pair of second half tallies to make the final score, 8-0.

The Maroons sent 34 of their 62 shots on the Hollins net.  Keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) and her defensive mates once again found themselves under attack for most of the afternoon.  McKee recorded 26 saves, many of the diving and leaping variety.

SierraLynn Johnson led Roanoke with four goals.  She bookended the scoring by netting the games fist and last goals of the afternoon.  Abbe Guarino added a goal and two assists while Laura Garbarini scored one goal to go with her one assist.  Carolyn Sarbacher and Sarah Dvorak split time in goal and combined on the shutout.

Hollins will finish the home portion of their schedule next week.  Shenandoah University visits Roanoke on Wednesday afternoon for Hollins home finale.  The matchup with the Hornets is scheduled for 4:00pm.
