Lexington, VA - As the Roanoke Valley braces for heavy rains and high winds, the Hollins soccer team made the short trip north on Interstate 81 to face off with Washington and Lee. The Generals sit atop the ODAC standings in a tie with Lynchburg College. Hollins faced a tough task if they were to upset the heavily favored home team.
Hollins had barely gotten off the bus as Washington and Lee scored in the game's opening minute. Another Generals goal at the five minute mark made the score 2-0 as Hollins faced a bevy of early shots on goal. W&L added three more scores in a three minute span and took a 5-0 lead at the midway point of the first half. The home team was at it again, netting another pair of goals in a one minute span to push their advantage to seven and after one more late goal, the Generals led 8-0 at the break.
The second half was much calmer as Hollins continued to fight on the defensive end of the field. The defense marked their players much better and didn't allow the Washington and Lee attackers to roam free. The Generals were able to crack the Hollins defense and later scored on a header into the Hollins net. Other than a brake away score late in the half, Hollins was able to keep the home team off the board as W&L managed just 13 second half shots. When the game was over, Washington and Lee had kept pace with Lynchburg and equaled the Hornets 8-0 conference mark.
The Generals took 45 shots with 26 of them being placed on target. Keeper Megan McKee (Madison, AL) once again recorded double digit saves. The sophomore added 15 saves to her ODAC leading tally.
Washington and Lee got two goals each by Erin Harvey, Becca Dunn, Lauren Abraham, and Rebecca Morris while three other Generals added a goal. Alexa Dreyer and Kate Sarfet each handed out a pair of assists while Shelbi Hendricks went the distance in goal to pick up the win.
Hollins will return home over the weekend when they host cross-town rival Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon. The game with the Maroons is scheduled to start at 1:00pm but before the game Hollins will take a moment to honor their two seniors.
