Roanoke, VA - The Hollins lacrosse team played the third of their four game home stand to open the 2018 season when they played host to Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon. The Berg came in with a perfect 2-0 record while Hollins came looking to pick up their first victory of the season.

For the third consecutive game, Hollins saw their hosts score the first goal of the matchup when Heidelberg found the back of the net just 45 seconds into the afternoon. A free position opportunity pushed the lead to 2-0 and after the visitors tallied twice in a 30 second span, the Hollins deficit was 5-0 after the opening 10 minutes of play. The Green and Gold would be held scoreless for the remainder of the first half with the Berg taking a big lead into the break. 13 Hollins turnovers and 12 draw controls by the road team would have the hosts playing catch-up for the remainder of the contest.

The Hollins defense would play much better in the second half, forcing 16 turnovers and securing 14 ground balls. Late in the game, Mara Smith would provide Hollins with three shots in a five minute stretch that would see the junior net her first tally of the season. Smith took a free position shot with just over 3:00 on the clock and beat the Heidelberg keeper. Smith would get another free position chance just seconds later but this time Mandi Phillips was up to the task and as the final horn sounded, the road team would leave with a 21-1 non-conference victory.

Smith led the way with a goal on three shots. Defender Carsen Helms caused three turnovers while collecting four ground balls. Goal keeper Delaney Waller led the defense with six ground balls while recording 16 saves, her first double-digit save effort of the year.

Angela Lulejian came off the bench to score seven goals with an assist and nine ground balls. Anna Winnicki had three scores and three helpers with Dana Dudley and Jen Kovarik adding a trio of goals apiece.

Hollins will wrap up her four game home stand to start the season when they play host to N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon.
