Roanoke, VA - During the starting lineups and National Anthem in advance of the lacrosse game with Muskingum, the weather couldn't have been more perfect for a mid-March afternoon. However, the winds picked up and the snow began to fall so quickly that it made finding the ball a major issue for both teams during a first half that would see 28 combined turnovers.
The Muskies would strike first, before the snow made conditions more difficult, scoring just 30 seconds after first draw. The playing conditions would continue to prove difficult as neither team did much for the next six plus minutes. However it would be the road team that would seize control of the action and take advantage of Hollins 15, first half, turnovers. At the break, the Muskies would enjoy a sizable lead, 15-0. The second half would see the weather subside and Hollins would start to earn some much needed zone time. Thanks to a free position score at the 20:22 mark, the home team would play their guests even for the first half of the second frame. In the end, turnovers and a 24 shot deficit would prove too much to overcome as the Green and Gold fell to 0-2 on the season, 19-1.
For the second consecutive outing first-year attacker Madi Szurley would score for Hollins. On defense, Valerie Heflin would pick up a pair of ground balls while securing four draw controls. In goal, Delaney Waller registered six saves with Samantha Lehman causing a turnover.
Kaeleigh Norvet had five goals with Paige Wattermen and Ashley Adams each recording four scores. The trio also accounted for five of the Muskies seven assists. Kate Shamel and Cieanna Jones split time in net with Shamel getting credit for the win.
Hollins will play for a third time this week when they host Heidelberg on Saturday at 1:00pm.
