Roanoke, VA - For the final time this season, the Hollins University lacrosse team defended her home field against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition. Saturday afternoon saw defending conference champion, Washington and Lee University come to town for the final lacrosse game of the 2016 regular season.
It didn't take the 16 time ODAC champs long to get things started. Jess Castelo and Lauren Procaccino combined to score five goals in the game's first five minutes of play to give the Generals a commanding lead. The first half continued to see the visitors from Lexington add to their advantage and when the halftime horn sounded, Washington and Lee was well on their way to another perfect (9-0) ODAC regular season. The second half once again saw play dominated on the Hollins end of the field. Hollins ended the afternoon on a bright spot as leading scorer Allie Helmbrecht ended the afternoon's scoring with the 39th tally of her first-year campaign. W&L capped their perfect, conference, regular season with a 21-1 victory.
Helmbrecht's 39 scores have her in a tie for 7th in the ODAC standings. Allie added a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover while senior captain Rikki Martinez finished her Hollins career with two ground balls, a draw control, and caused a pair of Generals turnovers. Fellow senior, Emily Lowther registered seven stops in goal, giving her 135 for the season.
Castelo and Corinne Wood each scored three times to lead a Generals attack that saw 11 different goal scorers on the afternoon. Carly Taglienti scored once but handed out seven assists. Hannah Wiltshire and Harleigh Bean split time in net, recording three saves for the visitors.
The loss marked the end of the regualr season for a Hollins team that failed to earn a spot in the 2016 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament, set to begin play next week.
