Salem, VA - Wednesday night marked the annual matchup of cross-town rivals when Hollins made the short trip to Salem to face Roanoke College. With a win, Hollins would catch the Maroons in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings. The home team scored first, but it was the visitors that controlled much of the first half. Roanoke took the lead with 3:03 left in the second quarter and closed the half on an 11-4 run with Hollins never being able to recover as the Maroons won, 77-49.
After Roanoke started the night with a hoop, Hollins rattled off seven straight to gain control of the game. The visitors would keep the lead until late in the second quarter. The Maroons regained the advantage but a quick basket by LaChrisha Hill knotted the score, 21-21. However, Hollins would go cold as Roanoke would score 11 of the final 15 points of the half. After the break, Roanoke picked right up where they left off and thanks to a stingy defense and 50% shooting from the field, built a big lead. Hollins would rally to net 19 fourth quarter points, but it wasn't enough as Roanoke would pick up their second conference win.
Sally Sroge enjoyed one of her best shooting games of the season when the sophomore hit seven of her 12 field goal attempts for 15 points. Nicolette Valencia scored 13 to go with three assists and three steals. Hill and Jewellanna Parfitt each grabbed a team high six rebounds with Parfitt recording four of Hollins 10 steals.
All conference player, Cary Beahm led Roanoke with 23 points and 12 boards. Allison Yeaw added 18 with Bridget Holleran netting 15 points and five assists.
Hollins will be back at home on Saturday when they welcome Bridgewater College for a 2:00pm tip.
